As we near the horrid milestone of the 1000th American military combat fatality, let's remind everyone that George Bush
could have had UN support in Iraq, but opted out by rushing in.
A 2003 WaPo article quoted Jacques Chirac pledging support for a 2nd UN resolution giving a 30-day deadline for the UN weapons inspectors to finish their job and report on Saddam's compliance.
Sorry no link, here's the ref:
(WaPo March 17, 2003, Pg. A13, "Chirac Suggests Iraq Be Given 30 More Days; French Leader Speaks Before Summit")
That's right, had we delayed our invasion by 26 or 27 days, we would likely have had full-UN support!
Gee, that would've really sucked, wouldn't it?
PS - As far as the counts, my understanding is that we've already passed 1000 for American combat fatalities (which would have to include the American "contractor" merc deaths), and well past 1000 American deaths in Iraq (which would have to include the many non-combat / post-combat fatalities).
